<< Trevor Barry, president of Amalgamation Yes, says people have already had their say and that it adds just another delay with “an unnecessary question” that doesn’t put them any further ahead. 

“The citizens assembly made a recommendation to amalgamate; they made a recommendation a year ago to hold a binding referendum this year,” Barry said. 

“That money should be spent on an even-handed information campaign, and all of this should have been done this year.”

Barry added that the only obstacle to the referendum beginning is the province. 

“A few years ago, Cowichan and Duncan were given the opportunity for a binding referendum with much less detailed information, and that minister had no problems giving their ministerial order to do so,” he said.

Victoria council will discuss the report during its committee meeting on June 25. >>
